♡22 Nights Away: A Retrospective♡

Dear Reader,

"If we were meant to stay in one place, we'd have roots instead of feet" - Rachel Wolchin

This coming September will mark the beginning of my 7th consecutive year in Guiding, having spent 4 years as a Guide and then almost 3 as a member of the Senior Section and a Brownie Young Leader.

Everyone involved in Guiding has the opportunity to spend nights way from home and the meeting place, even the youngest Rainbows! In the past 6+ years I have completed 22 nights away (currently),as a participant or volunteer, and by the end of this year the number will have increased to over 30 - with 11 nights away planned just for this term/summer - including my first Jamboree!!!!

As I have been working on totally them up lately, I thought I would reminisce on some of my trips away with Guiding, spanning the last 2 years, when I actually started to take photos of things....

Rangers Trip to London 9-10th April 2016
To celebrate the 100 year centenary of The Senior Section, my leaders took myself and another Ranger to spend a weekend in London, where we visited Pax Lodge - the UK Guiding World Centre, GirlGuiding Headquarters, Madame Tussaud's (where I made my promise) and a very exciting multi-storey Disney Store on Oxford Street.
We also spent the weekend finding geocaches, and eating pizza and hash browns in our hostel room at about 11pm!

Swallows & Amazons Camp 15-17th July 2016
During this shared Guide and Senior Section camp, Rangers were given the opportunity to work alongside the Guides, and work independently on our own chosen activities. Actives included flag designing, raft building, grass sledging and archery...in which the Rangers probably traumatized the very nice man, who we shall call Bob, that worked at the activity centre..oops!
We spent the weekend staying in the then brand new Shepherd Huts at Hautbois Activity Centre, which I guess you could call 'glamping' (we're not brave enough to camp in actual tents :/ ) but we did cook on a fire, I promise!

Disneyland Paris - 23rd - 26th October 2017
As a huge fan of all things Disney, I was over the moon when the first opportunity that came my way for an international trip with Guiding was to Disneyland Paris for the 25th Anniversary. After sewing a badge on my jumper upside down on the way there, getting laughed at, and sitting on the ferry resewing it on in shame - the end result was a proud moment- we arrived in France and would embark on our Disneyland adventure the very next morning.

On the first day in the park, I met Goofy, Snow White, had a dreadful encounter with Darth Vader - in which he stole my Minnie Mouse ears - rode on Hyper Space Mountain, and watched Stars on Parade and Illuminations (the firework display). Also, I bumped into my best friend Alice, who happened to be in Disneyland at the same time as me, freaky, as we literally live less than 10 houses away from each other!

On day 2, I cried over meeting Eeyore and Tigger, and Stitch, and riding on the Ratatouille Adventure, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Haunted Mansion and Rocky Mountain.

Brownie Starburst 5th-7th January 2018, Butlins Skegness
This trip marked my 3rd pack holiday with Brownies, and became the reason I am now a Young Leader at 2 units...what am I doing?1?! It was a truly special experience to be surrounded by so many Brownies, from all over the region... even if I did trip over one every so often!
We spent the weekend bowling, swimming, shopping, doing team building activities - such as blindfolded puzzles - as well as riding on the fairground and partying in the evenings, and celebrating one of our Brownies' birthday!

which, will bring my total nights away to 33!! And there will definitely be a 25 nights away badge needing to come my way after Brownie Pack holiday. However, the next milestone is 50, so I've got a little while to go, but I will be over half way there!

I promise that I will do my best, to be true to myself and develop my beliefs, to serve the Queen and my community, to help other people and to keep the Guide Law,
Yours,
The 16-Year-Old Brownie

♡World Thinking Day, Chinese New Year and Breaking Free... a February round-up♡

Dear Reader, This month has been an exciting one in the district. Most importantly we have enjoyed celebrating World Thinking Day - with units completing their own activities and discussions about the meaning behind the day - all topped off with a joint sleepover between some of our units. WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Guides & Girl Scouts) selected this year's World Thinking Day theme as LEADERSHIP . We interpreted this by naming our sleepover groups after key figures/leaders in Guiding, such as District Commissioners, Division Commissioners and WAGGGS themselves. We held our sleepover at our local meeting place on the 22nd (thinking day itself) and had over 20 girls attend from across 4 different units, including 2 of our young rainbows. The girls got to enjoy a rotation of activities including knot tying, tent building, cheese rolling, making rings out of pringles and a snow ball fight with tissues to finish. As well as the district leaders, the girls got to...

♡Easter, First Aid and some 'Time Travelling Rainbows'... a March and April Round-Up♡

Dear Reader,  So,I'm 2 months behind...again.. which appears to be my usual. And every time I forget to do things I blame it on college.. however, A levels really are looming now!!! I'm definitely excited for study leave followed by a part time programme - I'll have lots more time for things I enjoy, like writing, reading and for working on my ALQ, and ranger badges. However, the lucky thing is that you're getting 2 months in 1... can't argue with that. March was FUN-FILLED, PANCAKE PACKED & FUNDRAISING FANTASTIC!!!   One of the highlights of that March was our fantastic Rainbows and Guides fundraiser, including a huge raffle, jar tombola, and stalls from local sellers, such as fudge and homemade crafts. The evening raised a total of £267 (£133.50 for each unit) to help buy resources and carry on the opportunities for the members.  Our district members enjoyed many exciting opportunities - including our 4 Brownies sixers taking a trip to the...

♡Eaton Vale - Brownie Pack Holiday 6-8th July 2018♡

Dear Reader,  Last weekend we took 16 Brownies to Eaton Vale Guide and Scout Activity Centre, to experience some of the activities on offer as well as the activities we had organised ourselves. The programme for the weekend was packed full of outdoor activities, crafts and really, really good food! 🍔🍦 Friday 6th July After a failed Tesco delivery and an emergency trip to Tesco to cater for 21 people for the weekend, which is 2 scarily full large trolleys.... the fun was underway! After settling in and eating our tea, we embarked on a very complicated, slightly unclear orienteering trail that I in no way understood, and myself and Eagle Owl wandered around along with about 10 Brownies, in the wrong direction quite a lot of the time! #fail Skittles, the unit bear! The evening was then spent popping our heads repeatedly into the corridor to ask why the Brownies weren't in bed and going to sleep very late, of course! Thank goodness for the 'snug'...
