♡If I was Prime Minister, I would.... Parliament Week 2018♡

Dear Reader,

Today 1st Stalham Rangers joined with the Guides to participate in UK Parliament Week 2018!!!

Our challenge was to create a party, elect a leader to run for Prime Minister, to write a manifesto, and attempt to win the vote....

If I am voted your Prime Minister, I promise to ensure a budget centered around Mental Health provision, the NHS, and community funding.

Firstly, Mental Health. In GirlGuiding's last 'Girl's Attitude' survey, they found that only 25% of young women aged 7-21 are 'very happy', compared to 41% in 2009. Still, in 2018, more men aged 14-30 suffer with mental health issues due to a lack of confidence in speaking out and seeking help than women aged 14-30. Availability of mental health resources such as therapists is at an all time low due to increasing demand, whilst the money is disappearing faster than a pizza hut ice cream factory...

Next, the NHS. Our National Health Service has been serving British people since July 5th 1948, but with money being the most constant crippling problem since 1951 (that's 67 years!!!). If we tackle the issue of funding, the NHS can continue to provide the free medical service that is unique and one of the proudest parts of British history. Also, tackling mental health will lift a huge weight off of the NHS, and save millions of pounds every year.

Finally, community funding. Many children benefit dramatically in their key developmental years by accessing youth groups such as Brownies, Scouts, St.John's Ambulance, Swimming, Football, the list goes on....Making friends and having adventures makes children happy, successful and resilient - it has been found to improve mental health in children through craft, and other expressive activities, challenges and social interaction. Giving local councils the money to commission and upkeep facilities such as Stalham's brand new Poppy Centre helps more children to access ever-growing youth groups and have a space to grow.

So, do you see the links?

Better mental health across the UK  = less pressure on the special, prestigious health service

Happier children = better mental health

A continuing NHS = healthier, happier children, growing into healthier, happier adults

Tackle these 3 issues = launch into a happier, hopeful Britain!

Prime Minister Beth looking slightly demented and pleased with herself....

It is so, so important to educate young people about politics, we will be the government of the next generation, and in the light of the centenary of women gaining the vote, it is vital that we encourage women into politics and carry on what they fought for.

We also received a talk from a local town councillor who came to discuss politics at a local level, and the responsibility they have for local facilities, such as youth group meeting places, graveyards, street lights and pot holes!

Also, don't forget to subscribe to The 16-Year-Old Brownie, to receive an email when I post. Look for the button at the top of the home page ;)

I promise that I will do my best, to be true to myself and develop my beliefs, to serve the Queen and my community, to help other people and to keep the Guide Law,
Yours,

The 17-Year-Old Brownie

♡World Thinking Day, Chinese New Year and Breaking Free... a February round-up♡

Dear Reader, This month has been an exciting one in the district. Most importantly we have enjoyed celebrating World Thinking Day - with units completing their own activities and discussions about the meaning behind the day - all topped off with a joint sleepover between some of our units. WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Guides & Girl Scouts) selected this year's World Thinking Day theme as LEADERSHIP . We interpreted this by naming our sleepover groups after key figures/leaders in Guiding, such as District Commissioners, Division Commissioners and WAGGGS themselves. We held our sleepover at our local meeting place on the 22nd (thinking day itself) and had over 20 girls attend from across 4 different units, including 2 of our young rainbows. The girls got to enjoy a rotation of activities including knot tying, tent building, cheese rolling, making rings out of pringles and a snow ball fight with tissues to finish. As well as the district leaders, the girls got to...

♡Easter, First Aid and some 'Time Travelling Rainbows'... a March and April Round-Up♡

Dear Reader,  So,I'm 2 months behind...again.. which appears to be my usual. And every time I forget to do things I blame it on college.. however, A levels really are looming now!!! I'm definitely excited for study leave followed by a part time programme - I'll have lots more time for things I enjoy, like writing, reading and for working on my ALQ, and ranger badges. However, the lucky thing is that you're getting 2 months in 1... can't argue with that. March was FUN-FILLED, PANCAKE PACKED & FUNDRAISING FANTASTIC!!!   One of the highlights of that March was our fantastic Rainbows and Guides fundraiser, including a huge raffle, jar tombola, and stalls from local sellers, such as fudge and homemade crafts. The evening raised a total of £267 (£133.50 for each unit) to help buy resources and carry on the opportunities for the members.  Our district members enjoyed many exciting opportunities - including our 4 Brownies sixers taking a trip to the...

♡Eaton Vale - Brownie Pack Holiday 6-8th July 2018♡

Dear Reader,  Last weekend we took 16 Brownies to Eaton Vale Guide and Scout Activity Centre, to experience some of the activities on offer as well as the activities we had organised ourselves. The programme for the weekend was packed full of outdoor activities, crafts and really, really good food! 🍔🍦 Friday 6th July After a failed Tesco delivery and an emergency trip to Tesco to cater for 21 people for the weekend, which is 2 scarily full large trolleys.... the fun was underway! After settling in and eating our tea, we embarked on a very complicated, slightly unclear orienteering trail that I in no way understood, and myself and Eagle Owl wandered around along with about 10 Brownies, in the wrong direction quite a lot of the time! #fail Skittles, the unit bear! The evening was then spent popping our heads repeatedly into the corridor to ask why the Brownies weren't in bed and going to sleep very late, of course! Thank goodness for the 'snug'...
